Sweam 2017 REport

This years meeting was another great success. We were lucky to have two entertaining and absorbing talks from guest speakers. Professor Michael Gleeson, (former editor of Scott Brown, former President of the World Federation of Skull Base Societies, former Editor in Chief of the Journal of Neurological Surery - Skull Base) gave a fascinating talk on the 'Face Value' of what we do. A revealing journey through a prestigious career entwined with the facial nerve. Mr. Matthew Clark took us on a journey to the furthest corners of ENT global health; performing local anaestetic cholesteatoma operations on piles of bricks, watched by resident operation room bats and piles of cadavers!

The quality of oral presentations and posters impressed the judges throughout. All talks were expertly delivered and well thought out. The best oral presentation prize was won by Nicky Seymour for her excellent talk 'Doctor Google will see you now: an assessment of quality and readability of web-based information of cochlear implants, aimed at patients.' Thomas Geyton claimed the runner-up spot with his presentation 'A report on 15years of clinical negligence claims in rhinology.' The best poster was won by Ms Sangha Mitra Mummadi for 'National tracheostomy safety project guidelines: Are we displaying vital information at the bedside of stoma patients?'

Once again feedback was excellent. All suggestions for improvement (mainly parking and finding the venue!) have been noted and will be addressed for next year.

A great day was had by all. We had over 50 abstracts submitted with 15 being presented orally and 24 posters.
We were delighted and honoured to have Mr Robin Youngs and Prof Hisham Khalil as our guest speakers. Mr Youngs gave a wonderful presentation on how to get your work published and what makes a good and bad submission. Prof Hisham Khalil talked about research into clinical educational research in ENT.
